The 2018 SLSNZ Nationals got off to a great start with perfect conditions across the beach at Midway. Being on home turf was an asset to the Wainui competitors who were able to get a good amount of training in on the competition arena leading into the Nationals.
Lead by canoe guru Murray Robertson our U19 Men's and Open Women's crews both came away with bronze in the long course canoe rounds.
The u19 team of Joseph and George Zame, George Thorpe and David Barker came together and under coaching of Murray to paddle extremely well through the early rounds and finish hard for the bronze medal placing.
Having trained together for many months the Open Women's team of Anelia Evans, Sophie Burns, Moira Lee & Carolyn Hodgkinson were a solid and unified team who put in consistent paddles through the rounds to gain a finals spot coming in 3rd position for the bronze.
Team Wainui all hit the water on day one with heats and semis of the ski, Iron, Board Relays and through to finals in the Surf Race where the blue and white cap was well represented with U16 girls Ava Smith, U16 Boys Jack Keepa and Jonty Evans and Open Men's Joe Puddick and Jack Virtue.
